How good are evening classes for example, or any other way for that matter?

I would say doing something you like yourself, then you’re already on the way to having something in common with them. For example, (and I know it’s a cliche) but starting a night class means that you’ll be meeting people who like the same things and they may be someone there you like. I think the trouble with the stuff you tried before is the only thing you have in common with them is they want someone too.

The YMCA holds evening dance classes but unless you go with some friends it might look too forwarding.

why not join societies or hobby groups, that way you will meet “members of the oposite sex” who love doing what you do. you could also just be yourself and stop looking, am sure you’ll meet someone.
